Synopsis
Pawns depicts the liberation struggle in Zimbabwe, in particular the intra-guerilla conflicts within ZANU (Zimbabwe African National Union) that took place in Mozambique and also in Zimbabwe itself. The main protagonist Daniel (aka Fangs) enlists in the war as a way to escape his family's abject poverty after the death of his father. In Samupindi's universe, the war itself is neither heroic nor honorable. Inexperienced young men experience hunger and disease as they wait for events to unfold.
