Sculptors From Zimbabwe

The First Generation

Ben Joosten

Synopsis

This 400 page book is a detailed account of the beginnings of the Zimbabwean Stone Sculpture Movement concentrating on the First Generation of Sculptors but also offering a deep insight into the artists biographies, their culture and the main players of this phenomenon of contemporary African Sculpture. Academics, art students and art historians will delight in the museum quality photographs, correspondence and press cuttings illustrated throughout.

Review

The significant contribution Joosten makes here is to differentiate between the various workshops and locales within which this sculptural movement took place: Cyrene-Harare Nyarutsetso (Paterson), Serima (Groeber), Harare (McEwen), Nyanga (Mariga), and Tengenenge (Blomefield). The book is extensively illustrated, though all black-and-white images, and includes many photographs of the sculptors. - Smithsonian Libraries
