Shadows, like Chenjerai Hove's prizewinning Bones, reads like a long poem. The author says: Shadows was born many years ago when I saw two young people, lovers, opt for death instead of life. I then resolved that I would one day write their story. Now it is as I remember it, as other events have forced it to be not only their story, but the story of others as well as mine.

Although the novel is political, it is really about the human spirit, which cannot be killed. In a word, Hove binds Zimbabwe's wounds. - Peter Nazareth, World Literature Today
