The Convert

Danai Gurira

It's 1895 in the region of Africa that would become Zimbabwe. Jekesai, a young Shona girl fleeing a forced marriage, escapes from her village to the home of Chilford, an African catechist in the colonial town of Salisbury. As Chilford's newest convert, Jekesai struggles to integrate her new found Western faith with her closely held family traditions. When violence escalates around them, Jekesai and Chilford must find their place in a new world order that threatens their heritage, history and faith.

The wonder of Danai Gurira's new play is that [it] is neither depressingly bleak nor oppressively sober. It's a surprisingly vivacious portrait... of the entirely human impulse to adapt. - The Washington Post
