The Year of Uprising

Stanlake Samkange

This book is now out of print.

The uprising in 1896 of the Matabele and Mashona against the 2,000 white settlers who formed the advance guard of the colony of Rhodesia is Samkange's subject.

[Samkange's] tin ear, and the fact that much of his book sounds like transcriptions from historical sources, make for dull reading - hardly a recommendation for a work of fiction or history. - Robert L. Berner, World Literature Today

Stanlake John William Thompson Samkange (1922–1988) was a Zimbabwean historiographer, educationist, journalist, author, and African nationalist. He was a member of an elite Zimbabwean nationalist political dynasty and the most prolific of the first generation of black Zimbabwean creative writers in English.
