Those Years of Drought and Hunger

The Birth of African Fiction in English in Zimbabwe

Musaemura Zimunya

The book is out of print.

Those Years of Drought and Hunger discusses the emergence of a body of fiction in Zimbabwe born out of the country's colonial conquest and subsequent domination by a white settler minority. The book is an overhaul of Zimunya's MA dissertation supplemented by further research in Zimbabwe by the author. It treats the subject both thematically and chronologically

I think this is a bold and commendable pioneering effort by Zimunya not only because it helps to popularize Zimbabwean literature to the world outside but also, more important, because it makes an invaluable contribution to research in African literature. - Lupenga Mphande, Research in African Literatures

Musaemura Bonas Zimunya is one of Zimbabwe's most important contemporary writers. He teaches at the University of Zimbabwe.
