Synopsis
As the author explains in the Preface, this book grew out of his doctoral thesis on 'The Manyika and the Portuguese from 1575 to 1863' submitted to the University of London in 1971. It deals with political and economic changes in and around Manyika, a small but wealthy Shona Kingdom in the southeastern part of Zimbabwe. This Kingdom attracted many foreign interests, African and European, in the course of its long pre-colonial history.
